I found it rather interesting that it took Baldwin traveling to Paris to realize that he was an American. It bring to light that our lack of culture gives the individual nothing to grasp onto in terms of one's identity. Thus his travels to paris instead made clear to him that it is the American attidude that makes the "American Culture."

  1. Does the fact that American culture is not just one thing, not just one single culture, but is a mixture of so many different cultures really mean that we as Americans have "no culture," and nothing to hold on to? Or are we perhaps overwhelmed by the range of choices out there, so much that we retreat into some absolute, monolithic (and outmoded) version of identity? If there is there such a thing as "an American attitude," what is it? How would you describe it?
