I found it rather interesting that it took Baldwin traveling to Paris to realize that he was an American. It bring to light that our lack of culture gives the individual nothing to grasp onto in terms of one's identity. Thus his travels to paris instead made clear to him that it is the American attidude that makes the "American Culture."
